Always something going on: major events in Sarganserland and Werdenberg 2024

Whether it's sport, music or culture: several major events with national appeal are taking place in Sarganserland and Werdenberg this year - from traditional festivals to modern events. In this blog post, we present the most important ones and are giving away tickets on social media.


Bad RagARTz - Europe's largest open-air sculpture exhibition:
May 4 to October 30, 2024

The 9th Swiss Sculpture Triennial will take place from May 4 to October 30, 2024 in Bad Ragaz and Vaduz. Under the motto "Present - without today there would be no yesterday tomorrow", works by internationally renowned artists will be presented in the parks and green spaces as well as on the streets and squares. Bad RagARTz is one of the largest open-air art exhibitions in the world.

St.Gallen Cantonal Swiss Wrestling Festival Werdenberg-Grabs: May 26, 2024

On May 26, 2024, the 109th St.Gallen Cantonal Traditional Swiss Wrestling Festival will take place in Grabs in Werdenberg. Around 200 participants from the canton of St.Gallen and the guest cantons will compete for one of the coveted wreaths. Visitors can expect exciting moments and traditional Swiss culture in a generously designed wrestling arena.

Special feature: The "Grabs Mile" offers culinary specialties from the village.

Cantonal Music Festival 2024 in Mels:
June 14 to 16, 2024

The Cantonal Music Festival 2024 in Mels in Sarganserland promises a firework display of musical and cultural highlights. With 82 participating clubs and over 30 entertainment acts, brass music fans will get their money's worth. In addition to the music competition, there will be parade music and a varied supporting program.

Venue: Festival grounds in the village center of Mels; competition venues in the Verrucano, the old cinema in Mels and the Feldacker school building

New Heidi musical - Walensee stage:
June 12 to July 27, 2024

The Walensee Stage is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a new Heidi musical. "Heidi" was one of the first and most successful productions of the Walensee Stage. The popular story returns for the anniversary - but in a completely different version with new music, a new libretto and a first-time and touching production. The new production of Johanna Spyri's world bestseller celebrates its premiere in Walenstadt from June 12 to July 27, 2024.

Quellrock Open Air in Bad Ragaz:
June 21 and 22, 2024

The 44th Quellrock Open Air on 21 and 22 June 2024 attracts music fans from near and far with an explosive mix of musical diversity and first-class bands. The main acts include the rock bands "Wolfmother" from Australia and "Mando Diao" from Sweden as well as the Swiss pop band "Dabu Fantastic". The picturesque backdrop of the Freudenberg castle ruins creates a unique atmosphere at one of Switzerland's oldest music festivals.

The Fairy Queen - St. Gallen Festival:
June 21 to July 7, 2024

The St. Gallen Festival presents the semi-opera "The Fairy Queen" by Henry Purcell in 2024. The baroque opera based on Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" transports the audience to an enchanted forest. The performances take place on the Flumserberg, where the impressive natural backdrop provides the perfect setting. This magical, romantic comedy of mistaken identities marks the first time that the St. Gallen Concert and Theater Festival has been staged in the Sarganserland-Werdenberg region.

Kleinstadt Open Air Walenstadt:
July 5 and 6, 2024

The Kleinstadt Open Air in Walenstadt will once again offer a great line-up in 2024 with newcomer "Dari" and regional musician "Lea Wildhaber", who were selected by a fan vote. The festival is now taking place for the fourth time in the historic village center against the picturesque backdrop of the Churfirsten. With a maximum of 1,500 spectators per evening, music stars such as "Söhne Mannheims", "Luca Hänni" and "Megawatt" are close enough to touch.

Flumserberg Open Air -
the biggest Schlager music party in Switzerland: July 30 to August 2, 2024

The Flumserberg Open Air is considered the biggest Schlager music party in Switzerland and is known far beyond the borders of the Sarganserland-Werdenberg region. With Andrea Berg and Andreas Gabalier, two absolute superstars of German pop music will be performing exclusively on the Flumserberg stage this year. The open air promises unforgettable moments at an altitude of 1,400 meters and fantastic views of the Churfirsten mountain range and Lake Walen.

The Love Potion - Werdenberg Castle Festival: August 2 to 17, 2024

The Werdenberg Castle Festival will present Gaetano Donizetti's comic opera "The Love Potion" in 2024. In German and Italian, the opera tells the story of a peasant who wants to win the heart of the beautiful singer Adina with the help of a love potion. With a top-class ensemble and the Sinfonietta Vorarlberg orchestra, the festival promises an unforgettable experience for all music lovers. The opera is performed directly on Lake Werdenberg, with the small town and Werdenberg Castle providing a breathtaking backdrop.

Sargans Jazz Festival:
September 20 and 21, 2024

The popular jazz festival returns to Städtli Sargans from September 20 to 21, 2024. The new organizers are relying on a tried-and-tested concept: under the motto "small but nice", the festival will once again take place in the old town of Sargans, after having been held in various municipalities in Sarganserland in 2022. Visitors can expect a varied program with jazz, swing, blues, boogie-woogie and rock 'n' roll. The main acts include "Mama Shakers" and "Lucky Wüthrich".

Special feature: The jazz festival is under the direction of a new organizing committee that wants to build on its success before the coronavirus pandemic.

The Sarganserland-Werdenberg region will take part in the OLMA parade on October 12, 2024

OLMA, Switzerland's largest and most popular trade fair for the general public, will take place from October 10 to 20, 2024. Under the motto "uf Bsuech dihei", the canton of St. Gallen and its regions and municipalities will present themselves as a guest canton. The diversity of the canton will be showcased in a parade on Saturday, October 12, 2024. The Sarganserland-Werdenberg region will draw attention to the special features of the region with an original appearance and several colorful subjects.

Type of event: Trade fair for agriculture and nutrition

Special feature: The Sarganserland-Werdenberg region presents itself in the oversized living room of the host canton in Hall 9.1B and at the OLMA parade on October 12.

The canton of St. Gallen presented the "Sportvision Ost" project. The heart of the project is a winter sports facility in the Hagerbach trial mine in Flums.
